About the area
Midvale is one of the Salt Lake Valley's most striking reinvention stories. The city covers roughly 6 square miles in central Salt Lake County and divides cleanly into two halves: an established eastern residential area (Fort Union) of 1950s and 1970s single-family homes, and a western corridor where former lead smelter Superfund sites have become a nationally recognized brownfield redevelopment model. The Bingham Junction district, deleted from the EPA National Priorities List in April 2015 after more than 20 years of cleanup, is now anchored by major office tenants, Utah's first TopGolf, and rental apartment communities. The adjacent 351-acre Jordan Bluffs district is home to Zions Bancorporation's 400,000-square-foot LEED Platinum technology campus. The most accessible for-sale new construction in the project is Jordan Heights at View 78, with condos starting from $365,900.

Midvale City Park anchors the historic core with a pavilion, amphitheater, splash pad, disc golf course dubbed Disc on 6th, pickleball, basketball, and a historic water tower. Copperview Recreation Center, operated by Salt Lake County, offers a full gymnasium, weight and cardio rooms, group fitness classes, and an adjacent outdoor skate park. The Shops at Fort Union is a 700,000-square-foot power center with Smith's grocery, Walmart, Ross, Cinemark, and more than 50 stores across 51 acres. Bohemian Brewery and Restaurant is a Czech-heritage brewery and a Midvale cultural institution. The Midvale Main Arts and Culture District features 20-plus public murals and hosts the annual Harvest Days festival. Jordan River Trail runs 45 miles with a dedicated Midvale trailhead, and Jordan Bluffs Park provides Jordan River access for kayaking.
Getting Around
Downtown SLC is about 17 minutes by car; the airport is 18 to 20 minutes. Three TRAX stations serve Midvale: Bingham Junction station on the Red Line, Midvale Fort Union on the Blue Line, and Midvale Center on the Blue Line. Big Cottonwood Canyon (Brighton, Solitude) is 15 to 20 minutes east via Wasatch Boulevard, and Little Cottonwood Canyon (Snowbird, Alta) is 20 to 25 minutes—the shortest canyon drive of any city in this part of the valley. Park City via I-80 is about 40 minutes. UTA Route C1 ski bus operates from Midvale Fort Union TRAX station directly to Alta's Goldminer's Daughter Lodge approximately every 30 minutes during ski season peaks.
Superfund Site to Tech Campus: Bingham Junction and Jordan Bluffs
Midvale's western half spent most of the 20th century as a contaminated industrial site—the ASARCO lead smelter at Bingham Junction and the Sharon Steel tailings pile at Jordan Bluffs were both listed on the EPA's Superfund National Priorities List. The Jordan Bluffs site was deleted from the NPL in 2004. The Bingham Junction site was deleted in April 2015 after more than two decades of remediation, now cited nationally as a brownfield success story with more than $300 million in new tax base and 2,000-plus jobs. What replaced it includes major employers, Zions Bancorporation's LEED Platinum technology campus (opened 2022, approximately 1,500 workers), Utah's first TopGolf, and Parc View Apartments. The Jordan Bluffs master plan has city approval for up to 3,500 housing units and over one million square feet of additional office.
Schools
All of Midvale is served by Canyons School District; Jordan School District does not serve any Midvale address. The Canyons and Jordan districts split in the 2009-10 school year. Area schools include Copperview Elementary, East Midvale Elementary, Midvale Elementary (Spanish Dual Immersion program), and Midvalley Elementary at the elementary level; Midvale Middle School and Union Middle School at the middle level; and Hillcrest High School at the high school level. Midvale has the shorter drive. Big Cottonwood Canyon (Brighton, Solitude) is 15 to 20 minutes from Midvale versus 30 to 40 minutes from Murray. Little Cottonwood Canyon (Snowbird, Alta) is 20 to 25 minutes from Midvale versus 35 to 45 from Murray. Midvale Fort Union TRAX station also has a direct UTA ski bus (Route C1) to Alta during ski season.
Midvale is approximately 12 miles south of downtown SLC, about a 17-minute drive. Salt Lake City International Airport is roughly 18 to 20 minutes by car. By TRAX, the Blue Line from Fort Union station reaches downtown SLC in approximately 25 minutes.
