Federal Heights is one of Salt Lake City's most prestigious and established residential neighborhoods, occupying the northeast corner of the city directly below the University of Utah campus and adjacent to Red Butte Garden and Arboretum—the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West, with 100 acres and a summer concert amphitheater. The neighborhood takes its name and character from its original association with Fort Douglas, the military post established in 1862; officer-quarters development shaped the early street plan and tree canopy that distinguish the area today. Red Butte Garden and Arboretum is the neighborhood's most distinctive amenity—100 acres operated by the University of Utah, with 22 acres of display gardens, a summer outdoor concert series that draws national acts, and a trailhead connecting to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The Natural History Museum of Utah, housed in a copper-clad building in the foothills at 301 Wakara Way, provides world-class dinosaur and Utah natural history exhibits and serves as one of the most-used BST access points in the city. The University of Utah campus—research hospitals, Kingsbury Hall performing arts, Rice-Eccles Stadium, and the Marriott Library—is within a five-minute walk or drive. Getting Around
Downtown Salt Lake City is approximately 10 to 12 minutes southwest; Salt Lake City International Airport is 20 minutes west. University of Utah and U of U Health are accessible in under five minutes—one of the shortest university commutes of any SLC neighborhood. Little Cottonwood Canyon (Snowbird, Alta) and Big Cottonwood Canyon (Brighton, Solitude) are 25 to 35 minutes south via Wasatch Boulevard, slightly shorter than the downtown commute to the same canyons. UTA bus routes on Foothill Drive and Sunnyside Avenue connect to TRAX.

Federal Heights' defining advantage beyond its foothills setting is its position at the doorstep of the University of Utah and U of U Health, one of the nation's leading academic medical systems. The Block U on the hillside—placed in 1907, visible across the valley—is the neighborhood's permanent landmark and the university's signal to the city. Red Butte Canyon Research Natural Area, a federally designated research natural area managed by the University of Utah, abuts the eastern boundary of Federal Heights—one of the few federally protected research canyons within city limits anywhere in the United States. The Tomahawk Natural Area provides additional open space on the eastern edge. For faculty, physicians, and researchers, the commute is measured in minutes on foot.
